Moving in the Rain in Los Angeles

Published 2026-06-19 · Best Movers LA editorial team

Rain is rare in LA but not unheard of, and a wet move day doesn't have to be a disaster. With the right prep, most moves go ahead in the rain just fine — here's how to handle it.

Protect the boxes and contents

Cardboard is the weak point — it weakens fast when wet. Use plastic bins for anything you're worried about, double-bag electronics and important papers, and shrink-wrap upholstered furniture and mattresses (in their bags) so they don't soak up water on the dash between door and truck.

Protect the floors — both ends

Wet shoes and dripping boxes wreck floors and carpet. Lay down floor protection and towels at both doorways, put down mats, and keep a stack of towels handy to wipe items and dry the path. This is doubly important to protect a rental deposit.

Keep the crew moving safely

Wet stairs, ramps and truck floors are slip hazards. Slow down, keep the truck ramp dry and add traction, and stage a covered loading zone if you can. A canopy or even umbrellas over the door-to-truck path keeps the worst rain off the load.

Push through or reschedule?

Most LA rain is light enough to work through with these precautions. A genuine downpour or storm is worth rescheduling for safety and to protect your belongings — we'll talk it through with you. Our crews wrap items, protect floors and adapt to the weather. See our floor protection guide, wildfire-season moving guide, and checklist.
