Move-day floor damage is common, expensive, and almost entirely preventable — and in a rental it comes straight out of your deposit. A little protection on both ends saves scratched hardwood, cracked tile and ground-in carpet.
Dragged furniture and dropped weight gouge floors fast, and dollies leave tracks. In a rental, the landlord can deduct floor repair from your deposit; in a home you're selling or keeping, it's a real repair bill. Protecting the carry path is far cheaper than fixing it after.
Lay down a continuous path of protection along the route — ram board, cardboard, or moving blankets taped at the seams (use painter's tape on the floor itself so it doesn't lift the finish). Put felt pads or furniture sliders under anything you might need to shift. Never drag furniture across bare hardwood; lift it or slide it on protection.
Tile scratches less but cracks when something heavy is dropped, and grout chips. Cover high-traffic tile with cardboard or blankets, and be especially careful setting down appliances and stone or glass items. A dropped dolly wheel can crack a tile in one bad moment.
Carpet shows wheel tracks and grease, and traps whatever's on the movers' shoes. Use self-adhesive carpet film for the cleanest result, or lay cardboard/blankets on the main path. It also stops dolly wheels from snagging and pulling fibers.
Our crews carry moving blankets, floor runners and shoe care, and we protect floors and door frames as a standard part of the move — it's included in the hourly rate, not an add-on. That care is a big reason floors (and deposits) survive. See our local moving details or our guide to getting your full security deposit back.
