How to Protect Furniture During a Move

Published 2026-06-19 · Best Movers LA editorial team

Most furniture damage in a move is preventable with a few minutes of wrapping. Here's how the pros protect each type so nothing arrives scratched, dented or torn.

Moving blankets are the foundation

Every substantial piece — dressers, tables, headboards, cabinets — gets wrapped in a moving blanket, secured with stretch wrap or moving bands (never tape directly on wood or upholstery, which damages the finish or fabric). Blankets absorb the bumps and stop pieces from rubbing against each other in the truck.

Wrap by material

Upholstered sofas and chairs get stretch wrap over a blanket to keep them clean and dry. Wood furniture gets blankets and corner protectors on the vulnerable edges. Glass tabletops, mirrors and cabinet doors come off where possible, get bubble-wrapped, and travel on edge in mirror cartons. Leather gets a blanket, not plastic directly (which can trap moisture).

Disassemble what you can

Taking off table legs, removing cushions, and breaking down bed frames makes pieces easier to wrap, carry and fit through doorways — and less likely to snap. Bag and label the hardware so reassembly is painless.

Protect the path, too

Furniture also gets damaged on the way out — dragged across floors or banged on door frames. Pad door frames, protect floors along the carry route, and lift rather than drag. Our crews wrap and pad every piece and protect the path as a standard, included part of the move — see our floor protection guide, furniture disassembly, and tight-spaces guide.

Related questions

How do professional movers protect furniture?

They wrap each piece in a moving blanket secured with stretch wrap (never tape on the finish), add corner protectors, remove glass and legs where possible, and protect floors and door frames on the carry path.

Should I use plastic wrap or blankets on furniture?

Both — a moving blanket against the furniture for cushioning, with stretch wrap over it to hold the blanket and keep upholstery clean. Don't put plastic directly on leather, which traps moisture.

Can I use tape directly on wood furniture?

No — tape damages finishes and upholstery. Secure blankets with stretch wrap or moving bands instead, never tape on the piece itself.

How do I protect a glass tabletop when moving?

Remove it if possible, bubble-wrap it, and move it on edge in a mirror/glass carton — never flat, where road vibration can crack it.
