A water bed is the one bed you absolutely cannot move without fully draining — and draining and refilling correctly is most of the job. Here's the process.
Turn off and unplug the heater well in advance, then drain the mattress fully using a drain/fill kit or a pump connected to a hose (a standard garden hose and a siphon or pump works). A drained mattress still holds residual water, so plan for that. Never try to move a water bed with any water in it — it's enormously heavy and will tear.
Once drained, use the pump to remove remaining air and water, then fold the vinyl mattress loosely and carefully per the manufacturer's pattern — sharp creases in cold vinyl can crack and cause leaks. Folding in a warm room makes the vinyl more pliable.
Take apart the wooden frame (it's usually a knock-down design), bag the hardware, and pack the heater, liner and accessories together and labeled. The frame boards are heavy and long — bundle and pad them.
At the new place, reassemble the frame, position the liner and mattress, refill with the fill kit, add the conditioner, and let the heater bring it to temperature before sleeping on it. Our crews can move the drained components as part of the move — note the draining/refilling is yours to do. See our disassembly guide and what movers won't move.
Yes — completely. A filled or partly filled water bed is enormously heavy and the vinyl will tear. Drain it fully with a drain/fill kit or pump before moving anything.
After draining and removing the air, fold the vinyl loosely per the manufacturer's pattern — avoid sharp creases, which can crack cold vinyl and cause leaks. A warm room makes the vinyl more pliable.
Movers can transport the drained, disassembled components, but draining and refilling the mattress is the owner's job — it has to be empty before move day.
After refilling, add the conditioner and let the heater bring the bed up to temperature first — usually several hours to overnight — before sleeping on it.
