How to Move a Treadmill and Exercise Equipment

Published 2026-06-19 · Best Movers LA editorial team

Cardio machines are heavy, electronic, and awkward — a treadmill is part appliance, part furniture. Move it wrong and you can damage the deck, the motor or your back. Here's how to do it right.

Secure or fold the treadmill

Most treadmills fold up and lock for transport — do that, and engage any transport lock so the deck can't slam. For non-folding models, immobilize the deck. Unplug it and coil the cord. A treadmill is electronics first, so don't drop or jar it; the motor and console don't like impacts.

Ellipticals and bikes

Ellipticals are top-heavy and often best partially disassembled — remove the pedals/arms where possible and bag the hardware. Exercise bikes are simpler but still heavy; immobilize moving parts. Photograph connections before taking anything apart.

Weight plates and dumbbells

Never pile weights in one big box — a box of plates that's too heavy to lift is how floors and backs get hurt. Move plates and dumbbells in small, manageable loads in sturdy crates or boxes you can actually carry. Racks come apart; bag the hardware.

Protect floors and plan the stairs

Gym gear is heavy enough to gouge floors and crack tile, so protect the carry path on both ends, and take stairs slowly with two people and the weight downhill. LA walk-ups and garage gyms are exactly where a crew earns its keep. Our movers handle the heavy equipment as part of the move — see our home gym moving guide and furniture protection guide.

Related questions

How do you move a treadmill?

Fold and lock it (or immobilize the deck on non-folding models), unplug and coil the cord, and move it carefully without dropping or jarring it — the motor and console are sensitive to impacts. Use two people, especially on stairs.

Can you move a treadmill on its side?

It's best kept upright or folded flat as designed; avoid awkward angles that stress the deck and frame. Always engage the transport lock if it has one.

How do I move heavy weight plates?

In small, manageable loads in sturdy crates or boxes you can actually lift — never piled in one oversized box, which is how floors and backs get hurt.

Do movers handle exercise equipment?

Yes — our crews move treadmills, ellipticals, racks and weights as part of a standard move, protecting floors and taking the stairs safely. Mention the heaviest items when you book.
