Even with a careful crew, things occasionally get damaged in a move. What matters is knowing your coverage and the claim process before it happens, so a damaged item is an inconvenience rather than a fight.
California movers offer two basic valuation levels. "Released value" is the free, default coverage — but it pays only by weight (around 60 cents per pound), so a heavy-but-cheap item is covered and a light-but-valuable one barely is. "Full value protection" costs extra and covers repair or replacement value. Understand which you're choosing, and ask about full value for high-worth items. Separately, a reputable mover carries cargo and liability insurance and can provide a certificate of insurance (COI) to your building.
Photograph any damage before you move the item, note it on the inventory or delivery paperwork at the time, and keep the original packaging. File your claim in writing as soon as possible — coverage terms have deadlines. Good photos taken at delivery are the strongest evidence you can have.
Most damage is prevented at the wrapping stage: blankets, shrink wrap and proper padding on every piece, floor protection on the carry path, and careful handling of fragile and high-value items. We carry full cargo and liability insurance on every move and issue COIs to buildings within 24 hours. If something does go wrong, reply to us directly and we'll make it right. See our contact page or our packing services for fragile items.
60 cents per pound per article — the default. A 50-lb TV damaged beyond repair? You'd get $30. Always ask about Full Value Protection.
