Storage Unit Size Guide for Los Angeles

Published 2026-06-19 · Best Movers LA editorial team

Rent a storage unit that's too small and your things don't fit; too big and you're paying for empty space every month. Here's how to size it right for what you're actually storing.

The size chart

A rough guide: a 5×5 holds a closet's worth of boxes and small items; a 5×10 fits a studio or one room of furniture; a 10×10 holds about a one- to two-bedroom apartment; a 10×15 suits a two- to three-bedroom home; and a 10×20 (garage-sized) fits a three- to four-bedroom house. When unsure, picture the rooms you're storing.

Think in what you're storing, not square feet

It's easier to size by contents than by numbers: a few boxes and a bike (5×5), a bedroom set (5×10), a small apartment (10×10), a house's worth between homes (10×20). Tall units let you stack, so a smaller footprint can hold more than its floor area suggests if you pack up.

Climate control in LA

LA's summer heat and humidity swings can warp wood, damage electronics and harm anything delicate, so for furniture, electronics, art or documents, climate-controlled storage is worth the small premium. For tools, patio furniture or sealed bins, a standard unit is usually fine.

Cost and pairing it with your move

Don't over-rent — size to what you have, and remember you can stack up. Pairing storage with your move (we load, store and re-deliver) is often cheaper and far less work than renting a unit and moving everything twice yourself. See our moving storage guide and the storage service.

What size storage unit do I need?

Roughly: 5×5 for a closet of boxes, 5×10 for one room, 10×10 for a 1–2 bedroom apartment, 10×15 for a 2–3 bedroom home, and 10×20 (garage-sized) for a 3–4 bedroom house.

How do I choose a storage unit size?

Size by what you're storing rather than square feet — picture the rooms or items — and remember tall units let you stack, so a smaller footprint can hold more if you pack up.

Do I need climate-controlled storage in LA?

For furniture, electronics, art or documents, yes — LA's heat and humidity can warp and damage them. For tools, patio furniture or sealed bins, a standard unit is usually fine.

Is it cheaper to store with my movers or rent a unit myself?

Pairing storage with your move — where the crew loads, stores and re-delivers — is often cheaper and less work than renting a unit and moving everything twice yourself.
