Silver Lake is one of LA's most desirable neighborhoods — and one of its most misunderstood. It's not Silver Lake the city (that's just a reservoir). It's a dense, hilly eastside neighborhood that's equal parts creative class, longtime Latino families, and tech workers who wanted something with more personality than Playa Vista.
Silver Lake sits east of Hollywood and Los Feliz, north of Echo Park, and west of Atwater Village. The Silver Lake Reservoir anchors the middle of the neighborhood, with a 2.2-mile running path around it. Streets radiate up into the hills from Sunset Blvd and Rowena Ave.
Rent-controlled buildings (pre-1978) exist throughout but are heavily occupied. Street-level apartments on Sunset Blvd cost less than hillside homes with views.
Silver Lake is walkable by LA standards. Sunset Junction has coffee shops, bars, and restaurants in every direction. The reservoir path draws runners and dog walkers seven days a week. There's a weekly farmers market, a Trader Joe's, a Whole Foods, and a dense strip of independent restaurants on Rowena.
The neighborhood skews younger (25–45) and creative — designers, musicians, film industry workers, and WFH tech employees dominate. It's notably dog-friendly and has a strong coffee-shop culture.
Moving trucks need to be sized right for this neighborhood. A full 26-foot truck can have trouble on narrow hill streets. Most moves use a 16–20 foot truck. Let your movers know about stairs in advance — most Silver Lake units have them, many have multiple flights. Best Moving LA handles Silver Lake moves regularly and knows which blocks need extra navigation time.
