I-5 North is the primary route — up through the San Fernando Valley, over the Grapevine (Tejon Pass, 4,183 ft), across the Central Valley through Bakersfield, Fresno, and Stockton, then into the Bay Area via I-580 to I-880 or I-80. Total distance: 380–400 miles depending on destination neighborhood. Truck timing: 6–8 hours including a fuel stop.
The Grapevine occasionally closes in winter (rain/snow/wind) — December through February moves should have a weather contingency plan. The Bay Bridge and East Bay approach are congested during commute hours; we target arrival before 2pm or after 7pm.
SF proper has some of the most logistically challenging streets in the country — narrow lanes, steep grades, limited parking, and stringent building requirements for elevator access. Muni tracks on surface streets limit where trucks can park. Mission and Castro neighborhoods have particularly difficult access; we scout the specific address before dispatch. East Bay (Oakland, Berkeley) and Peninsula (San Jose, Palo Alto) addresses are typically much easier.
No interstate paperwork is needed — this is an entirely within-California move, handled under the same Cal T license as local moves. The quote structure is different from a local move (flat rate by job rather than hourly) but the licensing and insurance standards are identical.

A 1-bedroom LA-to-SF move runs $1,400–$2,200. A 2-bedroom is $2,000–$3,200. The I-5 route is primarily an in-state move, so California-licensed movers can handle it without separate interstate licensing. Get a binding estimate.
I-5 North through the Central Valley is fastest — about 380 miles, 6–7 hours for a truck. The coastal route (101 or PCH) is longer and more scenic but adds 60–90 minutes and has weight restrictions on some stretches. We use I-5 for moves and adjust timing around the Grapevine and Bay Area rush hours.
SF has higher median rents than LA — comparable 1-bedrooms run $2,800–$3,800 in SF vs $2,200–$2,800 in LA. California state taxes are the same. SF wins on public transit (Muni, BART) — a car is genuinely optional for many residents. LA wins on space, parking, and weather.
