A move runs smoothly when the right things happen in the right order. Here's a condensed, LA-specific timeline — the steps generic checklists miss, like parking permits, building COIs and elevator reservations that genuinely take time in this city.

4–6 weeks out

Book your movers (earlier for end-of-month or summer dates). Start decluttering room by room — you pay to move what you keep, so sell or donate now. Gather quotes in writing. If you're changing schools, request LAUSD or district transfer paperwork, which needs 2+ weeks.

2–3 weeks out

Reserve your building's freight elevator and request the COI requirements at both ends. In permit-zoned areas — Santa Monica, West Hollywood and parts of LA — arrange temporary no-parking permits for the truck (3–7 business days' lead). Start packing non-essentials. Schedule utility transfers: LADWP, SoCalGas and internet.

Move week and day

Confirm the crew, parking and elevator. Pack an essentials box (chargers, meds, toiletries, a change of clothes) and keep it with you. Defrost the fridge, finish boxing the kitchen, and clear pathways. On move day, reserve curb space with your car if you don't have a permit, label which room loads last and unpacks first, and do a final walk-through for the deposit.
