How to Pack a Home Office for Moving

Published 2026-06-19 · Best Movers LA editorial team

The home office is the room you most want running again immediately — and the one full of fragile electronics and tangled cables. Pack it methodically and you'll be back online day one.

Photograph and bag the cables

Before unplugging anything, photograph the back of your computer, monitor and router so you know what plugs where. Coil and label each cable, and keep all cables, chargers and power bricks in one clearly-marked bag — the cable puzzle is what wastes the most time at the new place.

Protect the electronics

Back up your data first — always. Move computers and monitors upright, in their original boxes if you have them, or wrapped in a blanket and boxed with padding (screens never flat). Keep electronics out of a hot parked truck in LA summer, and carry small valuable gear — laptops, drives — with you.

Files and documents

Pack files upright in small, sturdy boxes (paper is heavy) and keep important documents — IDs, contracts, tax records — with you rather than on the truck. This is a good moment to shred what you no longer need so you're not moving dead weight.

Supplies and furniture

Bag small supplies, disassemble the desk and shelving (hardware bagged and taped to the piece), and label a box "Office — set up first." Our crews disassemble and rebuild desks and handle electronics carefully as part of the move — see our TV & electronics guide, furniture disassembly, and moving insurance guide.

How do I pack a computer for moving?

Back up your data first, then move it upright in the original box if possible, or wrapped in a blanket and boxed with padding. Carry laptops and hard drives with you in the car.

How do I keep track of all the office cables?

Photograph the back of each device before unplugging, then coil, label and bag every cable, charger and power brick together in one marked bag.

Should I move important documents with the movers?

No — keep IDs, contracts, tax records and other important documents with you, not on the truck.

How do I get my home office running fast after the move?

Label one box 'Office — set up first,' keep your cables bagged and photographed, and unpack the office early. Our crews rebuild desks so you're ready to work sooner.
