How to Move a King-Size Bed

Published 2026-06-19 · Best Movers LA editorial team

A king bed is one of the largest single items in a home — too big to move assembled through most doorways, and heavy enough to need a plan. Broken down properly, it moves easily.

Disassemble the frame

Strip the bed and take the frame apart: remove the headboard and footboard, separate the rails, and pull out the slats or support beams. Bag and tape the hardware to a rail, and photograph the connections so reassembly is quick. A king frame almost never fits through a door assembled.

Handle the mattress and box spring

Bag the mattress in a king mattress bag to keep it clean, and don't fold it — innerspring and hybrid kings should move flat or on edge. A king box spring is often the trickiest piece: a standard king has a single large box spring that may not fit up tight stairwells, while a split king or California king comes in two halves that are far easier. Carry it on edge.

Get it through the door

Move the mattress, box spring and headboard on their edges through doorways — they're narrower that way. Two people minimum, especially on stairs, with the weight downhill. Removing an interior door off its hinges can buy the inches you need in a tight hallway.

Reassemble in the right room

Rebuild the bed in the room where it'll live — you don't want to assemble a king and then find it won't fit down the hall. Our crews disassemble and reassemble beds as part of the move, hardware tracked, and bag the mattress — see our furniture disassembly guide and mattress moving guide.

Related questions

Can a king bed fit through a doorway assembled?

Almost never — a king frame and headboard are too wide. Disassemble the frame and move the mattress, box spring and headboard on their edges through the door.

Can you fold a king mattress to move it?

No — innerspring and hybrid king mattresses should move flat or on edge, not folded, which can damage the coils. Bag it to keep it clean and carry it on edge through doorways.

Why is a king box spring so hard to move?

A standard king box spring is a single large piece that may not fit up tight stairwells. A split king or California king comes in two halves, which are much easier to maneuver.

Should I reassemble the bed before moving it in?

Reassemble it in the room where it'll live, not before — a built king bed won't fit down most hallways. Our crews rebuild it in place as part of the move.
