How to Move a Fish Tank or Aquarium

Published 2026-06-19 · Best Movers LA editorial team

An aquarium is the trickiest single item in a move — living animals, heavy water, and glass that cracks if you move it with anything in it. With the right order, fish and tank both survive.

Never move a tank with water, gravel or fish in it

The cardinal rule: an aquarium must be completely empty to move. Even a few inches of water or gravel puts uneven stress on the glass and seams and will crack it in transit. Plan to break it down the day of the move, not before.

The right order

Move the fish first: net them into sturdy, insulated containers or bags of their own tank water, with enough air, and keep them warm and dark and out of the LA heat. Save some tank water in clean buckets to reuse — it preserves the beneficial bacteria. Then remove plants and decor, bag the gravel (keep it damp to protect the bacteria), and pack the filter media wet so it doesn't die off.

The tank itself

Wrap the empty tank in blankets and move it upright and level, never on its side, in your own vehicle if possible — it's fragile and irreplaceable. Don't stack anything on it.

Setting back up fast

Reassemble quickly at the new place: gravel, decor and saved water back in, refill, restart the filter, get the temperature right, then acclimate and release the fish. The faster the turnaround, the less stress on the fish. Note that movers generally won't transport live fish — see what movers won't move — so plan to handle the tank yourself, and let our crew handle the rest of the move. See our checklist.

Related questions

Can you move a fish tank with water in it?

No — an aquarium must be completely empty of water, gravel and fish to move. Even a little water or gravel stresses the glass and seams and will crack the tank.

How do you move fish when moving?

Net them into insulated containers or bags of their own tank water with enough air, keep them warm, dark and out of the heat, and set the tank back up quickly so they're not in transit long.

Should I save the aquarium water when moving?

Yes — save some in clean buckets and reuse it, and keep the gravel and filter media damp. This preserves the beneficial bacteria your tank needs.

Will movers transport my aquarium and fish?

Movers generally won't transport live fish, and the filled tank can't be moved anyway. Plan to handle the aquarium yourself in your own vehicle while the crew handles the rest of the move.
