How to Move a Chandelier Without Breaking It

Published 2026-06-19 · Best Movers LA editorial team

A chandelier is fragile, wired in, and full of small breakable parts — one of the trickiest fixtures to move. Done carefully, it travels fine; rushed, it's a box of broken crystals.

Cut the power and take it down safely

Turn off the power at the breaker, not just the switch, before touching the fixture. Taking down a heavy chandelier is a two-person job — one supports the weight while the other disconnects the wiring. Photograph the wiring so reinstallation is straightforward, or plan to have an electrician rehang it.

Remove the delicate parts

Take off the bulbs, and remove the crystals, prisms and any detachable glass arms, wrapping each individually in paper or bubble wrap. Bag and label the small hardware. The fewer fragile parts left attached, the safer the body travels.

Wrap and box the body

Wrap the frame in bubble wrap and pad it well, then place it in a sturdy box with plenty of cushioning so the arms can't move — fill every gap. Pack the wrapped crystals in a separate, well-cushioned box marked fragile. Never let metal arms press on glass.

Transport and reinstall

Keep the chandelier boxes on top in the truck, never under anything heavy, and mark them FRAGILE — THIS SIDE UP. At the new place, reassemble in reverse and have an electrician reconnect the wiring if you're not comfortable with it. How do you pack a chandelier for moving?

Cut the power, take it down with two people, remove the bulbs, crystals and detachable arms (wrap each individually), then wrap and box the body with heavy cushioning so nothing shifts.

Should I remove the crystals from a chandelier before moving?

Yes — remove and individually wrap the crystals, prisms and detachable glass, and bag the hardware. The fewer fragile parts attached, the safer the body travels.

Do I need an electrician to move a chandelier?

Not to pack it, but for taking it down and rehanging the wiring, an electrician is wise if you're not comfortable with electrical work. Always cut power at the breaker first.

How do chandelier boxes ride in the truck?

On top, never under heavy boxes, marked FRAGILE and THIS SIDE UP, with the crystals in a separate well-cushioned box.
