How to Label Moving Boxes

Published 2026-06-19 · Best Movers LA editorial team

Good labeling is the difference between an organized unpack and a garage full of mystery boxes. The system takes seconds per box and saves you hours at the new place — here's how to do it right.

Label the sides, never the top

Write on at least two sides of each box, not the top — once boxes are stacked, the tops disappear and you can't read them. Use a thick marker so labels are visible across a room.

Write room, contents, and priority

Three things per box: the room it's going to ("Kitchen"), a few words on contents ("pots & pans"), and a priority flag for the handful you'll want first ("OPEN FIRST"). The room label is what tells movers where to set it down; the contents note is what saves you opening five boxes to find the coffee maker.

Color-code by room

For a faster system, assign each room a color — colored tape or a marker dot — and put a matching color by each room's door at the new place. Movers (and helpers) can then deliver boxes correctly without reading a word, which speeds the whole move-in.

Number boxes and keep an inventory

Number each box ("Kitchen 3 of 8") and keep a quick list — on your phone is fine — of what's in each number. It tells you instantly if a box is missing, helps with insurance claims, and lets you find a specific item without a search. It's especially worth it for a long-distance move.

Flag fragile and orientation

Mark fragile boxes clearly as FRAGILE and THIS SIDE UP on the sides, so they're loaded on top and set down gently. Our crews follow your labels to place every box in the right room and keep fragiles on top — which is exactly why clear labeling pays off. See our packing guide and complete LA moving checklist.

Related questions

Where should I write on a moving box?

On at least two sides, not the top — stacked boxes hide their tops. Use a thick marker so labels are readable across a room.

What's the best way to organize moving boxes?

Label each with room, contents and a priority flag, color-code by room, and number boxes with a matching inventory list so nothing goes missing.

Should I number my moving boxes?

Yes, especially for long-distance moves. Numbering plus a quick inventory list tells you instantly if a box is missing and helps with insurance claims.

How do movers know which room a box goes to?

From your room label on the side of the box. Color-coding the boxes and the room doorways makes it even faster and error-proof.
